Martha's Vineyard

We begin our drive from New York, across the entire state of Connecticut, through Rhode Island, to Cape Cod, Massachusetts and ferry across to Martha's Vineyard and the town of Oaks Bluff, where we stay at the Island Inn.  In the car are Joe, Hannah, Patrick AND...

Andy and Baxter AND Nancy and John AND Elizabeth and Jay AND all of our luggage.  (When we leave and drive to Boston, we add Tim and Chelsea and their luggage.  Yes, 10 people, a dog, all of our luggage, food basket and a cooler.  We had nothing on the top of the Yukon, had 3 in the front seat, 4 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd.  Everything else was behind the 3rd seat.  AND ... we had a blast!)

We eat lunch in Newport, Rhode Island at a Creamery.  Jay's father was born here.  There are 3 McGoverns in the telephone book, but Jay doesn't think there are any relatives still living there.  It is a memorable place since it is the birthplace of all of the children's grandfather.  (Hannah is Jay's niece - his sister Katy's daughter.)

Jay, Baxter and Hannah

We see an Eagle in his nest as we board the ferry.

Our car is the first one on.  Elizabeth had booked this ferry so far in advance and it was the ONLY one taking cars.  So... we were there plenty early.  We get great views of the sunset as we sail.  Click HERE for pictures on the ferry.

We take a open ATV for a private tour of Chappaquiddick.  This lighthouse is at the end of the island.  Here are Jay, Hannah, Nancy, John, Patrick and 2nd row has Elizabeth while the 3rd row has Chelsea and Tim with Baxter.

Here is the famous bridge where Ted Kennedy had his accident and killed his date, Mary Jo Kopectne.  There are only a few houses on the island and we saw all of them.  (Lights were on and people lived there, so ... Was he telling the truth that he could find no one there?  It seemed impossible for him to walk all the way to the ferry and swim in the rough and cold water across to Martha's Vineyard.  If he had been drunk, all of that should have sobered him up - or killed him.  But ... what do we know?)

We enjoyed lunch at the Colonial Inn one day.

Jay and his boys - Patrick, Joe, Andy and Tim

We also had a good lunch at Nancy's Restaurant.  (We couldn't resist the name!)

A calm beach was only 1/4 mile from the Inn.  Chelsea gathered shells to use as decorations at her and Tim's wedding.

We also enjoyed the beach with waves at the south end of the island.  Here are Patrick, Nancy, Joe, Andy, Elizabeth, Hannah and Tim (with Baxter in his shirt).

We had a great sail on the Mad Max, a sailboat that goes around the island.  Jay's sister Mary Sue and her friend Ron joined us for the sail and dinner.

These were some of the beautiful flowers at our Inn.  The island was filled with beautiful flowers, quaint historic homes, fabulous restaurants and pretty beaches.  We loved it.  Click HERE for pictures.

Fishing Trip

Joe shows off his Bluefish.

Joe, Jay and John are fishing out of Captain Phil's charter boat.

They try again.

Jay has a large Blue fish - or else he's straining holding out his arms!

Four happy fisherman

We all have supper tonight.  Captain Phil cleans the fish.  Elizabeth and Chelsea cook them with veggies.  Nancy and Hannah supervise.
